Can you experience the scent of a rose, or a skunk, without trying to keep what is pleasant or push away what is unpleasant, without getting caught up in a variety of thoughts associated with it, including thoughts that it is you or yours? Can you simply experience this moment of experience fully? If this is what you experience in this moment, then there will be a taste of intimacy with your life.
PhilPhilip L. Maybe I'm just reading it wrong, but I can't seem to understand. This refers people's tendency to exploit shared natural resources, such as ocean fisheries, to the point of total exhaustion. The justification is the thought that "if I don't use all this up right now, someone else surely will." It's the psychology of desperation, and it's one of the dark places our valued rugged individualism takes us.
Both of Diamond's books, "Collapse" and "Guns, Germs and Steel" are very worthwhile.Jon Yaffehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16897160897030082408noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4131458088978510307.post-29986413786736359562010-11-04T06:48:52.598-05:002010-11-04T06:48:52.598-05:00Thanks for sharing. Anyway, I, too, think about how Buddhism is evolving in the U.S. Your reflections give me food for thought.

Safe travels.Jennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03782915430015410178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4131458088978510307.post-51567846554074868052010-10-02T12:31:57.706-05:002010-10-02T12:31:57.706-05:00Wise words. After reading this entry and feeling the clear presence that you convey, I spent the next while going back and reading all your entries. You have a beautiful way of conveying this practice - I feel as though I have been listening to the dharma from a still and humble master. Thank you for sharing your insights. Oh well, to be awake is a rather common situation I suppose! My name is a play on my prior blog name - I was "dreaming" in Texas, so now I'm awake in New England...a little different from the "awake n" in your title...Lynn Nillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02889149260448218282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4131458088978510307.post-28483929166345172062009-08-22T06:50:25.012-05:002009-08-22T06:50:25.012-05:00Yes...something I can relate to. I'm grateful for the times I am able to bring myself to what's happening "now." Wish it happened more often...but with practice on myself, maybe I can improve. It's interesting how easy I can identify the need to focus on "now" for other people...but fail to do so for myself. Ah....
self.

The photo of the shower gave me an immediate sense of comfort, for I often find a shower to be a cleansing tool for my emotions as well as my shell. Sometimes I just want to stay in the shower for hours with very warm water soothing the bruises of whatever I think my reality is. But there's a limit to the availability of warm water at home; thus a limit to the refuge time in the shower.
--jjmummertAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4131458088978510307.post-29684445359213896882009-03-31T07:17:00.000-05:002009-03-31T07:17:00.000-05:00No Fixed Concepts.No Fixed Concepts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
